Lessnau (USA) - See all my reviews    Our old GE refrigerator (over 13 years old) failed. So, we figured we'd replace it with one with better energy efficiency. We wanted stainless steel, a freezer on the bottom, and an ice/water dispenser in the door. Plus, it had to be as big as we could fit into the space. This Maytag was one of the very, very few that met the criteria. Regarding the first of these machines that we bought (locally), even though the compressor and fans were running continuously, the machine never cooled down. By the next day, the refrigerator was around 53 degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer was only in the 40s. After various trials and tribulations, we got a replacement. This one works. However, we do have some ambivalent feelings toward it: - It takes a long time to reach operating temperature. I think this is a function of all the energy saving things they put in the machines nowadays (which is one of the reasons we decided to replace the old machine instead of repairing it)... Koopman "Pete" - See all my reviews    We purchased this unit (November 06)for the features and energy efficiency. Within the first month the ice maker quit and had to be replaced. Now the unit is 8 months old and the whole refrigerator quit (exception of inside light). It appears that the main control board has failed which the technician says is a common issue. After spending hours on the phone on hold and listening to automated messages you finally get told that you need to call the local Maytag service company and arrange for service yourself, so much for customer service. Because of the concern the technician gave on the control board I called Maytag back to see if the warranty period could be extended. It can, provided you pay for an extended warranty. Their exact words were "Since you already know that there are issues with this unit you would be wise to go ahead and purchase the extended warranty for $170". For what this unit costs I would expect a better design and obviously for Maytag to stand behind their... Apparently, this is a known problem. When we called Maytag, they should have overnighted a replacement board. Instead, they sent a repairman (next day) who didn't have the board. He emergency ordered it and it arrived two days later. We replaced the board (easy) and entered a code. Everything works now. But, we're very unhappy with this.
